New minimum required distribution age under the SECURE Act

Recent legislation affects Minimum Required Distributions (MRDs) from your retirement savings accounts.

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act passed in late December 2019, with many provisions taking effect in 2020. A key provision of the SECURE Act raises the age at which you must take MRDs from 70.5 to 72 for participants who turn 70.5 after 2019.

An easy way to determine your MRD age is based on your birthdate:

  • Born June 30, 1949 or earlier: You turned age 70.5 before January 1, 2020, therefore your MRD age is 70.5.
  • Born July 1, 1949 or later: Your MRD age is 72.
